Peggy Thorpe is the mother of Philip, who was a happy, healthy toddler. At the age of 2 he was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma, a deadly malignant tumor that started in his Adrenal gland and spread throughout his body. He underwent aggressive chemotherapy, radiation therapy, 2 surgeries, and a bone marrow harvest. He was in remission for a short time when the tumors came back.
Philip lost his battle a few months before his 4th birthday, which is July 26. His death inspired Peggy to create “Philip’s Christmas in July”, which is an annual event that she has kept going since his death in 1992. Each year Peggy brings “Christmas” to children in the hospital in honor of her sons’ birthday. Many of these children may not survive long enough to enjoy Christmas in December. From 1992-2013 she would travel to Southern CA to Loma Linda University Childrens’ Hospital, where little Philip was treated. Since 2014, she now delivers toys, gifts, and playroom supplies to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. She also spends the entire day providing a fun craft for the children in the playroom of the hospital. Peggy knows firsthand what these children go through-constant testing, many painful procedures, and chemotherapy that makes them feel awful and weakens their immune systems so severely, that they can’t fight off anything. A simple trip to any public place can render them seriously ill.
This is truly a Grass-Roots charity. Peggy tirelessly spreads the word about the event, in order to raise funds that will be used to purchase the toys and gifts for the children. Each year 99.3 KVYN helps promote Peggy’s efforts though Public service announcements about the “Philips Christmas in July” fundraising event happening this year on Saturday, June 27th , 5-9pm, at the Napa Moose Lodge. There will be a Silent Auction and live music performed by Sneaky Pete. Admission to the fundraiser is free, people wanting to attend are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy, game, or playroom supplies to put under a Christmas tree. Delicious smoked Tri-tip, Chicken, and other food will be served for $10 per plate. Each year, Peggy hopes to raise at least $5,000 towards buying gifts for the children. Ages range from infants to toddlers to teenagers. So every year, the amount needed for gifts can vary significantly. As we all know, buying electronics for the older ones can be more expensive than toys for younger children.
Then Peggy goes shopping! This is quite a job, have you ever tried to spend $5000 or more in one day? Peggy buys crayons and coloring books, DVDs, Play-Doh, Legos, puzzles, books, and games. Smaller toys are also purchased to fill what is known as the “Bone Marrow Box”. After having painful procedures, kids can pick from a huge box filled with Barbies and action figures, toy cars and trucks, and all kinds of small toys. It brings a smile to their faces and gives them a diversion from their pain. This year, Philips’ Christmas in July is happening Sunday, July 26th on Philip’s actual birthday, he would be 27. That makes this event a very special one! Peggy loves having the opportunity to honor her son by bringing joy to children fighting for their lives.
Please help her put a smile on their precious faces.
