FEAST Studio Welcomes Coquerel Family Wine Estates

Join us as our network comes to life under one roof for all things food, wine and philanthropy…with a taste of music.

Our first Coquerel Family Wine Estates is located just beyond the town of Calistoga at the north end of the Napa Valley. The heart and soul of the winery is their estate “Walnut Wash” vineyard, a gorgeous, oak-studded property that sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains. Since 2005, the estate has done extensive enhancement and replanting of the site to ensure world-class fruit from vintage to vintage. The combination of warm temperatures and deep, clay/stone soils makes this ideal terroir for Sauvignon Blanc, their flagship variety. It also produces exceptional Verdelho, Tempranillo and Petite Sirah. In addition to the estate fruit, Coquerel sources Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and other noble grapes from a handful of like-minded, premier growers throughout the Napa Valley.

CLAY AND BRENDA COCKERELL

As serious wine lovers for more than three decades, we have travelled extensively throughout the great appellations of Europe and sampled cb2everything from simple, honest regional bottlings to some of the world’s most celebrated wines. Years ago, while visiting the Napa Valley, we decided the time was right to make our own wines. Coquerel was born. (The name Coquerel is an archaic French derivation of our family name ‑ Cockerell.)

In 2005, we purchased a vineyard in Calistoga planted to old-vine, dry-farmed Sauvignon Blanc. In 2008 we acquired the adjacent site that was planted to a handful of traditional varieties rarely found in modern-day Napa. Since then we have revamped, replanted and upgraded our property to luxury-class winegrowing standards.

VINEYARDS & WINEMAKING 

The estate “Walnut Wash” vineyard sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains at the north end of Napa Valley in the Calistoga AVA. The site is warm and protected and features a mix of deep clay and stony soils. There are currently seven acres planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Petite Sirah and Tempranillo. In 2014 the team added four acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. Under the guidance of winemaker Christine Barbe, their vineyard is intensely farmed for low yields and high quality. The unique conditions and favorable terroir produces exceptional fruit each vintage.

On the winemaking front, Christine has had a dramatic impact on the quality and style of Coquerel’s wines. All of the winery bottlings are handmade in small lots to ensure character and authenticity.  The whites are bright, crisp, elegant and well structured. Reds are intense, aromatic, harmonious and lush. Complexity, concentration, balance and minerality are the hallmarks of its wines.
